San Diego Comic-Con Quote

Talking to a mid major comics publisher he summed up the "new" business model thusly, "Publishing is our R&D for movies and video games."

Wow. Well said. Agree or disagree there was no ambiguity in the statement.

I've got a host of dangerous thoughts swirling in my mind regarding SDCC, I promise to try and organize them and put them to "paper" before the weekend is up.....

This is a fairly common sentiment...and I know of more than a few aspiring publishers just starting out who view comics as an easy stepping stone to their "real" future careers as movie moguls. But it's sickening to those of us -- cranky old geezers, no doubt -- who actually think of comics as a storytelling medium unto itself, capable of beauty and artistry.

I know Hollywood dollars will butter many parsnips, and I can totally sympathize with a publisher saying "the movie and video game deals are the source of income that keep us afloat and help us publish the other comics which don't otherwise make huge profits." I've worked for publishers who say precisely that, and more power to them. But that's not what the above quote is saying, is it? It's saying "I have no interest in or respect for the medium and I'd rather be doing something else." I'd really kind of not ever like to work for a boss like that, in any profession.
