Hate New York Comic Con? I Want To Hear From You!

Ok, you don't have to hate NYCC but you should have really strong oppinons about it. I'm organizing a NYCC Confab next Wednesday in NYC (most sane people would call it a focus group, but that just seemed lame - plus I won't be behind a one way mirror) and I'm looking for fans with ideas and oppinons about the show to help us make it better.

What do you get out of it? Free lunch, free weekend pass, plenty of time to thumb wrestle with me and the pride to know that you helped build a better NYCC in 2009.

Listen up, I need help here - I spoke with some people on site last year who were rightfully pissed about autographing ticket distribution. If you and I spoke and you are reading this, email me please! As promised I want your oppinons on how to improve this. I have some of your contact info, but not everyone's.

If you wanna join the winning team and help build a better NYCC then post a comment here or email me to join Confab 08 where your oppinon counts and the sandwiches are free.

Note: we only have limited space, so just a few will be selected.

Note Part 2: I'm on my way out West for meetings with some comic and book big whigs before I head to PAX!

I would run to NYCC to see the Petrelli brothers from Heroes. My dream is to meet Adrian Pasdar and Milo Ventimiglia. All my friends are aware of this as well.

Where and when is this taking place. How can I sign up? Is happening on Sept 3rd?
Thank you for your time

The date is 9/3 and there will be two confabs, both in the afternoon. I don't know exact times, they don't tell me that! But probably like 12-1 and 2-3. You get the idea.

Hi Lance -

I would love to come down for this. I live in Providence, but I could use a day off from the office, especially if I get to spend it in NY.

I've been to the last 2 NYCC's and I have some ideas/comments that I'd love to share. If I'm not selected, I'll write an e-mail.

thanks -

If you need an extra person for this, my girlfriend was also there all 3 days. We had pretty different NYCC experiences as we were there for different things entirely. I only ever saw her on the way in and on the way back to the hotel.

thanks -

Hi Lance,

I can't make it out for the group but I think it's a great idea. I posted about it on my blog to spread the word for you.

One suggestion I have for right now is to space out the panels more. I know there are always lots of great one's and you want to pack in as much as you can but it can get really hectic if two of the more popular panels are close together. I think having a 20 or 30 minute space in between would really help things out. I don't know if that's feasible because of the number of panels but it's just a thought. Do you have to finish the convention by a certain time each day? If not, maybe letting some of the panels continue through later in the day would help with this as well.

I think I also made a suggestion to you right after the last NYCC about having more prominent signs about what events are going on throughout the day. I had no idea there were costume contests going on and I really would have liked to participate in them but I didn't spot any signs or see anything in my program about them. This could also apply to panel times and autograph sessions.

Hope this helps,

While I wouldn't be able to get into the City that day, a few things came to mind from this past Con...

Having the food inside (even though it was in the back) created horrible lines that went into the floor creating jammed up asiles and a mess getting thru as well as long lines for the food.

Signings in the booths on the floor are a great idea but did the same thing as the food lines, it made the floor clog up.

Widen the asiles, with people looking at the booths on the right and left, most slowly, made it impossible to get thru.

You've heard it before, but getting tickets for the autographs was ridiclous. We got there right after entering the Con, only to be told by whoever was helping the hand out that only a moron (yes, he said that) would stand on this line because by the time we got there all tickets would be gone. Well, we were morons, stayed on line to be told that the only tix left were for Terry Brooks, exactly who we wanted to see, but random people in front of us who had no idea who Mr. Brooks was, took a ticket just for the sake of taking a ticket. So, not all of his fans were able to get to meet him.

Remind your volunteers that they need to be nice and paitent to/with everyone. I understand they are busy and there's a lot going on, but the man calling people on the line morons wasn't the only horrible person I came across.

Thank you for all of your hard work, despite how it sounds we had a blast this year, and will of course be there next year!

I hope I'm not being stupid but every year I've ordered my tickets in advance and have received them in advance. However upon reaching the convention center I never managed to pick up a badge holder... because I had no idea where they were.

I've only been to a few conventions and last year was my first NYCC. I gotta say my friends and I had a blast.

In terms of people, I’ll give you a few of my ideas:
~I'm assuming some of the cast of Watchmen will be in attendance since the movie comes out the following month. If not, that would be smart.
~More TopCow people, especially Marc Silvestri, and some progress on the Witchblade film. ~Maybe some former cast members from Farscape, especially since Boom! Comics is now launching its comic series.
~Some of the Cast from The Middle Man show on ABC Family?

Also, I would like to see more contests or raffles.

And I think you need to put Nine Panel Nerds in Podcast Alley.

This would be the first time going to NYCC for me, and I'm not sure if I even am yet. But, I can tell you that nothing would stop me from being there if you have something on Watchmen. Good luck with the planning.

I already wrote to Larry Settembrini about it, but I would give my right arm to have Terry Dodson there. Seriously. Take the arm.

Oh and I wouldn't mind the following either:

Jeph Loeb, Tim Sale, Garth Ennis, Steve McNiven, Brian K Vaughn, Mark Millar, Jim Lee, J. Michael Straczynski, Adam Hughes, Jae Lee, Gabriele Dell'Otto, Gail Simone, Adrian Alphona

Or you know... Frank Miller... Stan Lee. Nobodies like that.

Con complaints: there was a distinct lack of knowledge and/or communication last year. Asking any of the staff was essentially pointless. It's such a huge event that hiring some people who know what's going on wouldn't be a bad thing. I guess a general communication boost would be awesome.

Also, on the panel note... spacing the panels sounds awesome. Maybe we could up the amount of tickets one can get for autographs too.
