Q&A w/ Rie Tanaka! An Experiment in Democracy!

New York Comic Con and I offered fans a chance to ask T.M.Revolution questions prior to his concert earlier in the year, and I'm happy to be able to offer fans a chance to interact with another of Japan's biggest names leading up to September's New York Anime Festival.

I'm honored to have Rie Tanaka join us at NYAF. We're excited. She's excited. And her fans on both sides of the Pacific are excited. And to bring all this excitement together, I'm pleased to announce NYAF will be sitting down with Tanaka-san next weekend to conduct a little interview. What'll I be asking her? I don't know. See, all the questions will be coming from you!

I'll be asking Rie Tanaka 10 questions, which means you've got 10 chances to get your question answered personally by one of Japan's biggest voice actresses.

How do you ask Tanaka-san a question? Simply leave a comment. I'll be going through all the comments and pull the 10 best and/or most interesting and ask them myself. Want to know Tanaka-san's favorite role? Want to know what show she wants to be a part of? Curious whether or not she likes long walks and rainy days? Maybe you're just dying to know if she's got any cute pets? Post your questions right here, and I'll ask Tanaka-san for answers. All questions must be posted before 11:59 PM EST on Sunday, August 24.

My question would be:

If you could have any job, as long it is not a voice actress/stage actress, singer, or model, what would it be and why?

How do you select your roles? You must be successful enough now that many new productions are requesting your voice. Since the character has no voice yet and by extension only a partially formed personality, how do you decide whether she would be a good fit for you? Do you read several episodes of the script? Do you speak with the original creator? What is the process?

How do you feel being typecasted sometimes into roles that are expected with previous history of certain personalities of characters you have done before?

Do you feel that the American voice artists who dubbed characters you've done remained faithful to your impressions of what you believe the character should sound like?

Have there been characters you've wanted to voice, but just didn't have the opportunity to do so? Why did that particular character(s) draw you in, and are those common types of roles you get excited about trying?

Have you heard any new details about the upcoming Gundam Seed Movie after it was reported that Chiaki Morosawa had fallen ill? Do you know how your role(Lacus Clyne) will play out in the movie?

Do you like voicing a character in an action oriented anime or simpler slice-of-life fare?

Being that some people cannot stand the role of Lacus Clyne in the SEED and SEED DESTINY series, how do you feel about her as a character? What sort of drive do you have to give her as good of a role as you have?

What did you think about the series Gundam SEED Destiny overall?

Did you think the show was a complete trainwreck?

Do you think characters portrayed through animation, are underrated in regards to how seiyuu such as yourself can portray the full potential of a characters' attributes as opposed to a live-action performance?

Recently, in an interview with Satoshi Kon, he made point of the stereotypes of women that appear in Japanese animation, and the lack of realistic characteristics among them. Since you've voiced so many notable female characters, do you believe that the majority of female characters in anime often don't hold onto more realistic traits that invoke strong female characters with their own intentions, and personalities, rather than falling to such labels as “moe”, or being the mere love interest of the main protagonist, and so forth?

In addition to the many heroines you have voiced in anime, video and computer games, drama CDs, etc., you have enjoyed great success in portraying antagonistic, evil and villian characters, including Morganna Mode Gone in .hack//SIGN; Suigintou in Rozen Maiden; Tomoe Marguerite in My-Otome; Nomura (Takagi) in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (When They Cry 2); Kirie Fujou in Kara no Kyoukai; Sayara Yamanobe in Mnemosyne -Mnemosyne no Musume-tachi-; Elisha Lourie in Allison to Lillia; and Helga Neumann in Phantasy Star Portable, the recent smash hit Sega game on the Sony PSP. How do you prepare to play antagonistic, evil, villainous roles? How does it differ from playing heroines?
