Takashi Miike, Sho Sakurai, and Yatterman Come To NYCC!

YATTERMAN UPDATE (2/3/09): NYCC'S FULL AND REVISED YATTERMAN, MIIKE, AND SAKURAI SCHEDULE HAS BEEN POSTED AND YOU CAN FIND IT HERE. http://www.mediumatlarge.net/2009/02/updated-list-of-yatterman-miike-and.html
YATTERMAN UPDATE (1/22/09): As is the case with all of New York Comic Con's celebrity attendees, schedules are always in flux, and with Miike-san and Sakurai-san -- two of our biggest celebrities -- their schedules may shift as well. Yatterman is coming to New York Comic Con for its world premiere, and the information presented below is based on our original Press Release along with an update from early on January 22nd. We will post any further updates here in clearly marked updates. We don't want to provide any misinformation to all of Miike-san and Sakurai-san's fans, but we hope that they understand that while both Miike-san and Sakurai-san will be premiering Yatterman at New York Comic Con, the specifics of their appearances may change. Originally, both Miike-san and Sakurai-san were scheduled to participate in the panel and autograph session on Friday prior to the DGA Theater screening. Miike-san is still commited to both the panel and signing. Due to Sakurai-san's press schedule, we can no longer confirm he'll be participating in the panel and signing; however, he will be present and part of the world premiere at the DGA Theater on Friday night, and tickets to this screening will be distributed freely at Nikkatsu's booth at New York Comic Con as well as via a contest to members of the subwaycinema.com mailing list. We are presenting you with information as it is updated, and for the latest you need to only check this blog post, and we will continually update it. We welcome Miike-san and Sakurai-san to New York, and we hope to involve them in as many activities as we can.
EARLIER POST: NYCC is pleased to reveal that maverick Japanese director Takashi Miike will appear at our 2009 event as a Guest of Honor and superstar actor and pop star Sho Sakurai will attend as a Special Guest. Miike and Sakurai will be at NYCC to speak about their upcoming feature film Yatterman — and then present the world premiere of the highly-anticipated movie, produced by Nikkatsu Studios and scheduled for release in Japan in early March.

Fans have been waiting for Takashi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer, Sukiyaki Western Django) to create a giant robot movie for years, and finally it's here. Starring Sho Sakurai, Yatterman is the story of two teenagers who run a high-tech toy shop which serves as a cover for their crime-busting exploits as a pair of masked super heroes. Miike's Yatterman is based on a classic anime series created by Tatsuo Yoshida (founder of anime studio Tatsunoko Productions, which produced Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, Casshern and Macross). Yoshida's Yatterman originally premiered in 1977 and ran for 108 wildly popular episodes and was long considered by Miike as one of his dream projects. It was revived in 2008 as a crowd-pleasing television series, and now it hits the big screen as Nikkatsu's Spring tentpole action blockbuster. With a massive budget and character and mecha designs by Katsuya Terada of Blood: The Last Vampire and Cutie Honey, it's an over-the-top ride that, par for the course for director Miike, promises to turn the giant robot movie on its mechanical head.

Takashi Miike will be at NYCC to speak about Yatterman at 4 PM on Friday, February 6 in the IGN Theater, and will present an exclusive 7-minute clip from the film. Miike and Sakurai will then appear at the World Premiere of Yatterman at 8 PM the same day, at the New York Directors Guild Theater, at 110 West 57th Street. A limited number of free tickets for the screening will be made available at the Nikkatsu Booth (#1315) earlier on Friday.

Takashi Miike will also be signing autographs at the Nikkatsu Booth (#1315) – fans should check at the booth for the exact signing schedule. The world premiere of Yatterman would not be possible without the tremendous support of Nikkatsu, Subway Cinema and The Kitano Hotel, the official hotel sponsor for the event.

An encore presentation of the film will take place on Saturday, February 7, at 8:30 PM in the IGN Theater at the Jacob Javits Center. Admission to the Saturday screening is free and open to all New York Comic Con attendees.

Thank you for bringing this to US fans of Sho Sakurai and Arashi. I can't express how important this event is to me and how as I'm typing this, I'm shaking. So thank you again!

YES I LOVE YOU GUYS JESUS CHRIST I NEVER EXPECTED THIS TO HAPPEN!!!!!!

Miike is one of my heroes and this was the most unexpected guest ever. Seriously, you just made me incredibly happy.

But I have to make sure I get a ticket.......

This is the best news I have heard in a long time. I hope that everyone who wants to will be able to see them, if not at the panel, at least for an autograph. Thank you so much having these wonderful guests! We don't get many chances to see meet J-pop idols like this and Sho and Arashi are huge over here!

redneckotaku said...

I have a very difficult choice to see the World Premiere of Yatterman on Friday night or World premiere of the Animated Wonder Woman. I hate decisions like this on scheduling at cons.

This is very cool news indeed to have Takeshi Miike at the con.

Anonymous said...

The fact that there is a autograph session has completely blown my mind and made me fangirl like I had never done before. Meeting a member of Arashi, or just meeting a Japanese pop idol never seemed likely until now. Not to mention, the thought of my Ichi the Killer DVD possibly having Takeshi's sig. on it is absolutely wonderful.

Thank you NYCC and to all the sponsers for making this happen. It will be my first time attending NYCC and my excitement has reached it's peak.

The year is starting to look brighter.

Peter Tatara said...

Tom, you mentioned a concern about Yatterman and Wonder Woman both being on Friday night. If you want to see both, go with Wonder Woman on Friday and Yatterman on Saturday. (Yatterman will be screening both nights -- once off-site and once inside the Javits.)

redneckotaku said...

I didn't know they were doing two showings of the film. This is what I get for reading a post with five minutes left in Lunch.

I know fans from all across the Unites States (and even a few from Europe!) are traveling to New York Comic Con just to meet Sho Sakurai -- I'm one of them, of course! This will truly be a once in a lifetime experience for us, and I really want to thank you!

Anonymous said...

Sho is signing autographs, eh? Well I never wanna hear the US JE fans complaining they get nothing again.

Anonymous said...

We still don't get concerts, which is ind of a big deal. But whatever, not ruining the happy aura!

Anonymous said...

AMAZING!! This is the best news I could EVER hope for!! Sho! Here I come~!!!

Just one question though... will the autograph signing be on Friday? I want to know if I need to be a weekend pass or if a Friday one would suffice.

Riko said...

I'd really like to know when the signing will be so I could make my plans.

I hope some how Yatterman will show in the San Diego Comic Con too! I'm a huge fan of Arashi and Sakurai Sho in California and I can't believe I'll miss this event. I hope whoever gets to go will have fun! :D

Will the autograph signing be on Friday? I'm pretty much only going to go to NYCC for him~

sidewalk-rebel said...

did this post just change?

it said before that Sho would also be talking about the film and signing autographs 0.0

now it doesn't??

Anonymous said...

Okay what's going on -- Sho's not even coming to the convention? There are a lot and I mean a lot of people traveling JUST to see him. People from Japan even because this is. Excuse me. WAS a once-in-a-lifetime chance. So what's the deal?

Anonymous said...

What is going on?
Sho isn't coming now?
I hope you know there are going to be a lot of disappointed fans...
Including myself who is flying from Michigan JUST to see Sho...
or was going to see Sho.

PLEASE CLARIFY!

Peter Tatara said...

All, we'll be posting the latest updates at the top of the Yatterman blog post as they come in. We were informed today that due to Sakurai-san's press schedule he may not be able to make the panel and autographing -- but will still be at NYC for the World Premiere Screening. This information is not final, and we are not trying to mislead any of Sho's fans. We want Miike-san and Sakurai-san at as many events as they can do, but we were alerted today that Sakurai-san can no longer confirm he'll be at two of the events. He's still coming, but his final schedule is still in flux. NYCC apologies and I apologize.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for clarification. Apologies for the rampant e-mails and upset notes but I can't express how important this is not just for myself but tons of Arashi/Sho fans. We finally have another chance to show Sho that he is greatly supported here in America and finding out that it might be taken away is enough to make any huge fan upset. I truly hope all of Sakurai-san's fans are able to at least see the man! This is a one-in-a-lifetime moment.

Anonymous said...

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!
How come Sakurai-kun can no longer confirm he'll be at two of the events?
I am his Korean fan who is visiting NYC just becuase to see him.
I have made all the plan and reservations already.
I am so disappointed....

Anonymous said...

It's clearly stated that his schedule is booked. Why are you speaking as if you're mad at Sho? It's not his fault. He can't help it, so cut him some slack.

Anonymous said...

It really was too good to be true. I guess Johnny's Entertainment won't make any exceptions.
I still think it's a great opportunity to show just how many of us Arashi/Sho fans are here in the US.

Anonymous said...

Are you kidding me?!
The only reason I bought the damn $50 ticket was to just see SHO SAKURAI at the panel and signing! I have no reason to go to NYCC if Sho is unable to make it.

Maki said...

This is pretty rediculous NYCC. Your page made it seem confirmed that Sakurai Sho would be attending the panel and the autograph session, by posting this information not only on the schedule, but on the front page of your site. The convention is only two weeks away, so my friend and I hastily made travel preparations ONLY to see him. This means plane tickets and hotels. It's understandable that Sakurai Sho is a busy man, as his fans we know that more than anyone. But your site really should have been more clear about the tentative nature of these plans.

So now I'm wondering, is there still a possibility that Sho will be at the panel, or is it pretty much off the table?

Jaye from Charlotte said...

Well as long as he is coming and still will show up for the premiere... But then Why Comic Con made it sound like Sakurai was participating in the events that are not sure??? I knew it wasn't realistic considering his position in Japan but was really excited to see him in America FINALLY and thought he was doing something special for the fans in the U.S... but nope we were only tricked by comic con. Thanks A LOT NYCC
and Sho, you better be coming!!T_T

Lance Fensterman said...

Guys, just to be clear here - we were given a schedule and OK'd to announce it. Due to time demands that schedule is changing, but not finalized. We are so sorry, but please be patient while this gets sorted out from Japan and we can update you. We would never want to "dupe" or "mislead" you, EVER. That is not in our best interest at all. We want you guys to be happy! Please stay tuned and I promise you that if you are not happy, you can reach me personally for a refund of your ticket over this issue.

-Lance

Miko said...

Does that include a refund of the plane ticket too? Because there was not a single part of this website that said this was all tentative. Lots of fans have spent HUNDREDS of dollars just to come and see Sho, and then you're handling it like it's no big deal? It's insulting.

Trying to pass the blame off for not handling this well over to their company is just cowardice. You were given permission to post the information, but you also could have said that this was very subject to change. Then you wouldn't have had so many fans with torches after you.

This is ridiculous. Fix it.

Anonymous said...

Whoa, sorry Miko, but almost EVERYTHING is subject to change. No need to even ask them for the money for your plane ticket! That's too much! It's crazy!

Kimitsu said...

The comment reaction here is pretty ridiculous, and I feel like I must apologize on behalf of the more reasonable Arashi fandom. We do recognize that he has a pretty harsh schedule, probably better than anyone short of the man himself and his managers. This backlash is also pretty clear evidence of how much this hurts you as well.

Here's hoping that things do go well, and thank you for hosting the premiere of this movie! I'm sure there are plenty of Miike Takashi fans looking forward to this as well!

Anonymous said...

Hi,

Now that it is somewhat cleared that Sho will be in NYCC but without the confirmation on autograph session, I hope the NYCC people will do your best to get Sho in the panel. We know his talent agency is pretty strict about press release (seeing that you have taken down the images with him on it) and Sho's having a very tight schedule, but his participation is HIGHLY anticipated. Fans across America / the world are flying and spending their hard earned money just to see him so the slight panic is totally understandable.

Thank you for bringing Yatterman over.

Stephanie said...

Kimitsu! Thank you for being reasonable...
With Cons, especially, things change all the time.

I also bought a plan ticket and a hotel room for the con, but I am still going because I think it will still be worth it.

We understand all the hard work you are putting into the NYCC! Sorry for any harsh emails or comments you may receive in this confusing times.

Anonymous said...

I would also like to apologize for the behavior of some of the Sakurai fans here in the comment section -- we're not all like that, honestly! ;) I won't lie and say I'm not disappointed about the autograph/panel thing, but I think it will be worth it in the end just to see him on the red carpet, and I'm still very excited about the event.
I'd like to thank all the NYCC staff for keeping us up to date on the situation!

Maki said...

Hmm...I tried to write another comment, but it didn't show up. If it does later, I apologize for the repeat.

While I sort of understand the sentiment of Kimitsu wanting to let you guys know the Arashi fandom has good people in it, I do think that we're pretty justified in being upset. A lot of money was spent in the hopes of seeing Sho up close in person, and now we're being told we might only see him from a huge distance at a movie premiere (where he's not likely to be answering our questions or addressing the crowd much). On top of that, there's only a limited number of tickets for said premiere. What are people who paid to get a flight to New York and stay in a hotel JUST to see Sho supposed to do if they don't manage to get tickets to the premiere?

For those of us in that situation, we'd really appreciate some sensitivity and some more concrete information, since it's more than just dissapointment at stake. Even just "it's highly unlikely that he'll be at the panel" or "it's still a possibility" or "we're doing our best to reschedule it to fit into his schedule" would be helpful.

Anonymous said...

Yeah.. it was too good to be true.

Anonymous said...

I knew this was coming.
Every one Look
Sakurai Sho's company
Johnny&Entertainment company
dosesn't allow their celebrities to have a open autograph session.
That's why I haven't bought a ticket yet, because my sole purpose is to see Sakurai. It's most likely that the company will cancel his autograph session. Arashi fans in Japan and South Korea are already going nuts about this autograph session. On top of that Sho has some crazy schedule as you guys already know, he and Arash have a lot of TV programs, News Zero, Arashi no Shukudai Kun, VS Ararhi, and Secret of Arashi. Sorry to NY and American fans, but... getting an authograph from sho in an open autograph session is seeing a pig fly. Good Luck Guys

Anonymous said...

I'm so glad I didn't buy my ticket just yet. I went to NYCC last year just for TMR and wasn't sure if I should brave the Arashi fangirls to go this year for Sho. Sorry that people are reacting so harshly, though. :'3

Anonymous said...

The damage had been done.
Unfortunately the original announcement was also edited by omitting Sakurai-san name for the designated talk and autograph session.

We do hope however that the NYCC staff will do your best in securing Sho Sakurai appearance as a panel member as it was announced earlier.

Maki said...

"We do hope however that the NYCC staff will do your best in securing Sho Sakurai appearance as a panel member as it was announced earlier."

Agreed. While the autograph session was really always too good to be true, and I wouldn't have ben surprised at all to hear it was cancelled, the panel was really the main attraction from the beginning. We appreciate you guys doing you best on that front.

Again thank you, and I really really hope that He'll be able to make the panel and the autograph session.

I think Sho-kun wants to be at the panel. So, please understand Sho-kun's fans. Don't be frustrated with NYCC. Arashi's agency (Johnny's) is famous for strict management for the artists in Japan. This situation is not only NYCC's fault, but also Johnny's. I am also disappointed as you. But, if Sho-kun knows this arguments, must weigh on his mind. You guys, have hope! NYCC will negotiate with Johnny's and get Sho-kun back to previous schedule.

Anonymous said...

Let's have faith that the schedule can be worked out where Sho can do the panel and the autograph signing. I think originally it would have been impossible for him to do the panel, signing, and premiere in one night. He will still be in NYC!

Let's hope for the best.

Please keep us informed! Thank you!

Anonymous said...

Yeah we all should've known it was too good to be true. And NYCC shouldn't have jumped the gun with the announcement like this until they cleared everything with JE. But for some reason, it seemed like it was, and well..here we are.

Anyway, I just have a question regarding the limited tickets to the premiere. Do people with Press badges also have to get one of those tickets, or does being a member of the Press automatically mean they get to attend? Because obviously, I do NOT want to have to fight Miike Takashi fans, Arashi fans, AND members of the press for a ticket.

Sorry for the dumb question, but since I'm from out of state, I need to know as much as possible.

Thanks very much.

Anonymous said...

I would have to agree with what a few people have said already that I was/am more interested in seeing Sho at the panel rather than the autograph session. This was the main reason I purchased a ticket for this con. If NYCC could try their best to secure that, I would be satisfied.

Jenny said...

I must say I'm equally frustrated with how the situation turned out. A lot of Arashi fans have made arrangements the second we found out that Sakurai was coming to NYCC. I'm flying in from Toronto just to be able to see him up close in person.

It's really disappointing to say the least with him being off the panel and autograph session. There's also no guarantees that we'll even get tickets to the premiere. Even if we do, there'll be no chance of interaction with Sho.

Granted, we all knew that JE would restrict Sho's activities in NY, but when the announcement was made earlier in the week that he would be present at the autograph session, it really lifted our hopes up. I know that NYCC is doing everything to fulfill the earlier arrangements, but I think the damage is already done (which is why there are some harsh comments posted above).

Either way, my trip to NY is pretty much planned. As a true Arashi fan, I know that a lot of us will still be attending to support Sho, regardless of whatever schedule he has. I just wish there was some way to guarantee that we'll actually be able to see him.

Anonymous said...

Hmm. I don't disagree with the sentiment that perhaps some details were published too early and I do understand people being disappointed. I do not, however, agree with the sentiment that NYCC organizers have done fans a great disservice. With giant cons like these, this sort of rescheduling happens frequently, even with the most airtight agreement made weeks in advance. Disappointing as it may be, NYCC cannot be blamed for the whims any of us had to suddenly drop the cash to go.

I also concur that it would be wonderfully appreciated if Sakurai could attend the panel, since that has the largest seating capacity and would perhaps allow all the fans coming to see him. But that's subject to time constraints, on Sakurai, Miike, and NYCC's part, so it is what it will be.

More importantly, though - NYCC is helping to bring us Yatterman. Twice. This should not be ignored since Japan won't even get to see the movie until March. Some of us are actually interested in seeing the movie just as much as seeing Sakurai Sho.

Anonymous said...

I'll blame JE before NYCC, blargh.

Haven't bought a ticket yet, and I'm glad of it, phew. Not for me, but for the others affected (I know there are a lot), but will NYCC be refunding tickets to those who wanted to come see Sho?

Anonymous said...

I'm one of those people who bought a ticket right away after hearing Yatterman was premiering and Sho would be at the nycc.

And while things are not happening the way I expected, a lot of us fans have decided to make the very best of the situation.

So, have hope and do just that - make the best of the extraordinary experience that is the nycc and to meet the countless other Arashi fans who will finally have a long overdue east-coast gathering! =)

- Illy

Anonymous said...

I would agree with lily.

It sucks, we're disappointed, but we'll make the best of it, and hopefully can have some fun with seeing other fans and not get mired too much in coming just to be upset. Where's the enjoyment in that?

Frankly, I've already spent $400 to go, felt a little silly when I did it, and refuse at this point to make a tragedy of it. I'm going to hope that something good comes of it--it's not like I'm going to run into too many other fans in TX, right? So I hope to have lots of fun with some of you ^_^ (and hope that the panel, at least, still goes forward with Sho).

Anonymous said...

Gee, I think I know you, Anon-san from TX. I agree that we all just need to make the best of this and let Sho (and Miike) know that their American fans are good folks who can be mature and cheerful even in the face of rescinded appearances. At the very least, we'll get to meet a bunch of other fans we didn't know before, right? (Even as I feel silly about my impulsive purchase of plane tickets from IN) I'm excited about that aspect of the con!

Anonymous said...

Guys.. be excited. The movie looks awesome!

dang, i purchased my plane ticket and i'm comin from freakin Cali just to see Shokun and get his autograph! :(.. i hope he can make it and am still waiting for NYCC to finalize what will actually going to happen with Sho's schedule.

Anonymous said...

Oh, I do hope it'll be possible to buy NYCC tickets AFTER the con straightens out Sho's schedule...

I love Sho, but I don't know if a 2 second glance from a far distance is worth all that money... (lol, am I a bad fan?)

Anonymous said...

I am a little embarrassed that some fans are so superficial that they only wanted to travel to New York for an autograph, rather than to meet him and see the movie. I, on the other hand, am super excited for the premiere. I'll definitely be at the Nikkatsu Booth at 1PM to get my ticket! Thanks, NYCC!

In Japan time it's already the 25th, so Happy 27th Birthday, Sho!

next week... is getting near ^.^
hope i can get in to see the movie because it looks really good.

Anonymous said...

I am really surprized that there are quite a few Arashi/Sakurai fans in US!

It might just help if every fan sends mail of petition to JE asking Sho Sakurai to spend more time in NYCC, of course including the initially proposed "autograph" session. When there is a big demand, JE listens.

If my memory serves me correctly, Sho mentioned the following episode when he was interviewed. The concert in Korea was made possible because Sho Sakurai was so madly welcomed by the local Arashi fans when he went there privately. He told it to the JE office, and subsequently rather a quick decision was made to have a concert in 2008.

Anonymous said...

^ There's an online petition for Arashi to have a concert in America and there are like over 800 signatures :) Maybe we should send that lol

Any updates?

yes, any updates a week before the event would be much appreciated. Thanks NYCC!

Hi.It's 31JAN.
I am wondering if sho will be coming for sure. I understand there will be a limited number of ticket available for evening premiere but how difficult to get the ticket? I am coming from westcoast hoping to see sho and I will be very diappointed if I can't even attend the premiere. I am sure so many people line up for the tickets....being free!I do not mind paying for it just like watching movie....I never attend comic convention and kind of nervous not knowing what to expect.....we all apreciate update for sho's shcedule!Thank you!

Hi. (^_^) Thank you very much for NY Comic Con, Subway Cinema, Nikkatsu and the Kitano Hotel (...and anyone I forgot to mention!) for hosting such a wonderful event!! My friend and I are going to NY from Chicago in hope to see "Yatterman World Premiere!! (Mr. Sho Sakurai!!)" We have NYCC tickets, so, all I am hoping is that Nikkatsu booth has enough tickets for us (...and for all fans!), too!! Thank you very much. :)

Anonymous said...

Having done some research online I would just like to point out to everyone that the Directors Guild cinema where the world premiere of 'Yatterman' is taking place only has 480 seats. Presumably there will be Miike and Sho's people, film critics and journalists in attendance so this leaves a very limited number of seats for the public.
Also on Friday the Comic Con is open to "professionals" from 10am onwards and the public will only be allowed in from 1pm. Could someone please clarify whether the industry people will get first dibs with the premiere tickets or whether they will be available from 1pm onwards?
Either way I'm getting to the front of the queue early...
