BEA Attendance Update.....
Whew, as the boys on the BEA team say, my dogs are barking! Happy to be back in the room blogging and the shoes are off for a few minutes.....
The hall felt less jammed today than Friday, but in my conversations with exhibitors traffic was good. The attendee numbers bear that felling out as the number of verified attendees through end of day Saturday is about 4% less than the total number of verified attendees through the end of day Saturday, 2007. If flat is the new up, then near flat is the new near up I suppose.....
An interesting stat is that members of the media in attendance is up to 1700 from 1250 in 07.
I'll try to do a random tidbit post with some flip vid after this, unless the party circuit calls me.....
As for tomorrow, join me in celebrating the last Sunday EVER of BookExpo! As you know next year we go to a weekday 3 day (1 day of education, 2 shows days) format as opposed to this 4 day format. Based on conversations on the floor today, I don't think anyone will be missing Sunday. Maybe we'll throw a memorial service tomorrow!

If you make the show all weekdays, aren't you likely to lose attendees?--Many teachers and librarians can't take that many days off, airfares are often cheaper on the weekend, etc. Is Javits cheaper on weekdays than weekends? What's the appeal of weekdays only?
I don't think it will be more expensive during the week especially for hotels and flying is cheaper during the week.
If it only a two day show then librarians could fly in on Tuesday night and do the two days and be back at work on Friday only missing two days in the library. It is about time we worked during the week like many other normal professionals. How many accountants have weekend professional shows and conferences? I am all for this and will advocate with my library professionals to attend this important event.
Wow... only two days to view all of the exhibits?
I rarely attend the educational day. Can you make it more interesting and offer buzz panels and author interviews like you did in '07? Or perhaps borrow from the ICV2 conference and run some panels on the Big Picture? (Ebooks, print on demand, Google, free downloads...) Perhaps offer a breakfast, lunch, dinner program to replace the keynote speaker (with goody bags at the end, instead of cheapo ARCs) on Day One.
Or, one could ask, would the education track be less attended if the show floor was open at the same time? Or would more people attend a session just as they attend a panel during the show?
I also think having publisher meeting rooms off the floor hurts the dynamic of the floor. They need to be better publicized, have an open-door policy (no appointment necessary like at Toy Fair) with a partitioned private meeting space, and if in Hall 1A, there should be access to Hall 1B, which would help draw people to those marginalized exhibitors.
Oh, and if large publishers plan to be on the floor, encourage them to avoid the single-aisle linear plan in favor of multi-aisle/island layout. (Harlequin wins this year's award for best display.) Traffic and crowd control is so much easier. Chronicle, Andrews McMeel, DC Comics all offer open space while exhibiting numerous titles and authors.
One more idea: if the authors are in town, then have them do parallel events at bookstores and libraries. Publicize the BookExpo connection, and comp the store's events staff to BEANY. This program can then morph into what New York Is Book Country did, using weekday events to publicize the weekend event. (New York is Book Expo?)
TO ANONYMOUS 2: I am an elementary school librarian and I use School Business (days) for my absences for any workshop or conference.
I love that the book expo is the last part of May, too, helps me prepare for next years orders AND gets me 'out of school' a bit early.
Words do matter, Lance. It is "my dogs IS barkin'". At least that's how we say it out west.
