BookExpo Attendance is Up - Yeah, Really.
Just got numbers for the day and so far verified attendees are up 5% over 2007. Yeah, read that again!
Here's the explanation - we verify attendees when you get your badge, you are scanned and we know you are here. So looking at the verified attendees through the end of Friday this year versus verified attendees through the end of Friday in 2007 the number of attendees is 5% larger.
I will leave it to the "pundits" to decide why, what that means and if it's good or bad, but for the end of day one, I'm extremely happy to see positive growth when very few expected it.....

After a full day today and a sweet opening night last night:
GREAT show so far!!
Shipping seems less crowded, perhaps because of fewer freebies. Check tonnage shipped in 2007 with this year at end of show.
Lines moved quickly, about 15 minutes. Uptown stage for memoirs was good, well attended, looks like a success.
Free books cut back, but food still offered as best way to get people to visit booth. More likely in the future?
Would be nice to have Friday booth signings advertised/registered in advance. Missed Diana Gabaldon who was early at Random.
Random House drastically scaled back.
Express registration had longer line than onsite registration! Perhaps install self service kiosks like at airports?
