Star Wars!!!!!!

Months and months in the making, I’m psyched beyond words to finally tell you that we will be the exclusive producer of the Star Wars Celebration events going forward. Cool for us, sure, but what does this mean for you?
With our pals over at Lucasfilm we’ll be creating Star Wars Celebration V next August 12-15 in Orlando Florida.

This is honestly one of the most exciting projects I’ve worked on and we are all thrilled beyond words to be working with Lucasfilm and on the Star Wars events. In Peter’s words as he was writing some copy for the web site, “I would be the 10-year-old Peter’s hero”. Oh yeah, the web site, it’s live now, but will be filled in substantially as we craft the event, you can find it at
www.starwarscelebration.com.

Tickets will go on sale in the next week and hotel and travel info will be up in the next couple of weeks. I’ll make sure to give regular updates here on the blog, but the best way to know just what’s what around the Celebration is to sign up for the email newsletter and you can do that on the web site.

We’ve been working on this partnership for months and it’s been killing me not to say a word about it, but working with Lucasfilm and Star Wars specifically is a dream come true, and it’s an indication of where things are going for us. We started 5 years ago with an untested idea in New York Comic Con and for 2010 we’ll be set to run at least 6 events in the pop culture space and we’ll be working with some of the best brands in the world like Lucasfilm, UFC and Penny Arcade. It’s a cool time to be a part of the quirky little team of people here at Reed who are working on all of these projects.

OK, now it’s going to be a ton of work for the next 8 months to build an amazing Celebration V, but we are amped and ready to go! Drop me an email, leave me a comment and tell me what you want out of the show this summer because, as always, we are but the humble servants of the fans!

Lastly, I really wanted to make an announcement without using the words “con-wars” but I think I have to set the record straight … of course, it’s not lost on me what else is happening in the world of pop culture events on our Celebration dates, but my advice on that is please stop looking for black helicopters! We had about a zillion factors guiding our date selection decision and we took into account the most pertinent concerns for our fans and exhibitors. We looked carefully at other shows happening in and around Florida in the month of August, we did our best to avoid conflict, but ultimately had to choose the dates that were available to us and that would work the best for our fans. Nothing more than that folks. Sorry to even bring this up, but someone certainly will, so I’d just as soon head off the conspiracy theories before they germinate too much.

Wow. Star Wars. This is totally sick!

This is very cool to see. I wish it was in Baltimore, though. Orlando would make a very nice destination for the con. How much are hotel rooms going to be?

Lance Fensterman said...

Hey Tom, hotels will be up in the next 10-12 days and the rates are cheap. anywhere from 59 to 129.

Leo said...

Hi Lance, what have you done???? Now I must make a very difficult decision. Shall I go to Orlando or to New York for the NYCC. Please advice.

Greetings Leo

The room rates are great. $59 a night is great for summer in Orlando. I may have to make this trip instead of going to Dragon Con. Spend Friday and Saturday at the show and Sunday and monday seeing Orlando.

THANK YOU!!!!!! I was wanting orlando all along given that the center is 10 minutes from where we live. Been a fan since childhood and This will be my first Celebration I CANT WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is gonna be great! As the Alor'ad (leader) of the Buurenaar Verda Clan (Storm Warriors/Florida Chapter of the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club), I can say that we WILL be on hand and en-force to help make this the best con event possible!

A big huzzah and kudos for all the support! Lance, I, and the entire Lucas and Reed teams want to put on the biggest and best Star Wars party on the planet -- and we're humbled by all the feedback. There'll be a lot of ways for fans to be involved, so keep your eyes on starwarscelebration.com!

Way to go, you picked the worst time to schedule this con. This con brings folks from all over the US, not just Florida. If you had payed any attention to the BIG cons, most of your potential customers are already going to either Dragon Con or San Diego Comicon. Each is 2 weeks from your con. You automatically lost thousands of customers who are already committed to those. Not much of a business man are you Lance.

Evan said...

Question: Whats included in the $120 4 day pass? Is there incentive to getting that one over buying the $40 3 day and the $50 Saturday pass?

Anonymous,
Well then we'll see who the true fans are after all.

Ghostsoldier said...

Not wanting to be confrontational on this blog, but screw the nay-sayers. D-Con has out-lived it's usefulness as a convention anyway, and is now more of a costumed booze-and-party-a-thon-- I've been several times, and won't be going back; the 'conflict' is no big deal.

Celebration is more for the true Star Wars fan anyway, and not the green-fat-guy-in-a-thong-and-wings crowd....just my opinion!

loosetoon said...

@Evan, I could be wrong, but I think Thursday, Friday and Sunday passes are $45 each, not $45 for a 3-day pass for those days.

I already have my tix for Dragon*Con but I live in Atlanta so I don't get a hotel room for Dragon. Still will be a tuff decision is I end up not being able to go to both.

@Loosetoon

Gotcha thanks!

A quick note on dates for everyone. We have learned through much experience that there are no perfect dates. There is always something happening somewhere that will make it less then ideal. The number of factors that go into such a decision are pretty intense. You’ll have to trust me, we do this for a living. Are these dates perfect? Nope. Are they the very best we had to pick from with a couple of dozen factors being considered? Yes, they are. We never want to make things hard for our customers or our exhibitors, EVER, but we do look at a lot of factors before making a decision.

Holy Crap on a stick! Congrats to you and the Reed team!! I know that Lucasfilm can be very harsh negotiators, so you pulling this off is a feat in itself! Way to make a poor girl jealous, too! :-P

Pete/Lance have you been to any of the other Celebrations? I have been to C3, which was great, but the lines were crazy long.
Do you have new different methods to help us fans see everyone that we want to see?
Will you also have a various VIP tickets for peple who do not like wait in line to see the guests?

Congrats guys. And I'm sure the Rebel Legion will be eager to offer their services too. Hopefully, our fearless RL leaders will be contacting you soon.

What would I like at this Con? NOT having to stand in line OUTSIDE in the god-awful humidity, for hours on end, waiting to get into the Con for A/C. Please, please keep that in mind when you're organizing this event. I've been to many Cons and Star Wars Cons seem to have the worst lines in the most awful places. That goes for autographs too, especially if you are pulling in heavy weights like Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, etc.

Also, sure would appreciate it if you can put some controls on the media/press around the Artist, Actors/Actress, VIPs, etc. The VIPs are there for the fans. WE pay LOTS of money to get their autographs and to meet them in person. Having the press push the fans out of the way and cutting in line for interviews just causes conflict and annoys the crap out of everybody. Please put some control on that and make sure there is flow in the line and time waiting in the lines. I think you'll get a lot more positive feedback than negative if you make it tolerable for all.

Lastly, a lot of us are costumers...And since this time of year at Orlando is going to be sweltering in humidity, is there any way to allow club fan groups, like the 501st and Rebel Legion to gain early access into the Con, so as to avoid standing outside in costume? WE will all faint from dehydration and our costumes will get damaged from the humidity. I've always wanted to see a Trooper faint, but not under these extremes...LOL. So please take some pity and consideration on those that will be wearing costumes.

Only other things I would like to have is...easy transportation to and from the airport and possible shuttle transportation to other theme parks.

I'm excited and hope this will be a great experience.

See you in August.

Master Mina

Congratulations! That's beyond awesome!
What I would like for this celebration? Well, I enjoyed Celebration IV immensely, so sure bring back things such as... fast passes for the official store (I read we will be able to pre-order some items... sounds great),
easy transportation to and from the airport, shuttles, I'd like to see Charles Ross' one-man SW show again and SW in 30 minutes, that was hilarious. I also would really like to see SW in Concert while there. It would be great to hold a special performance for the fans. I believe a Fan Club Breakfast will be organized by Official Pix once again... I also quite enjoyed the SW movie marathon at Celebration IV and would attend again if one was to be organized. I'm not thinking of anything else at the moment, but I'm sure other fans will come up with wonderful ideas as well.
May The Force Be With You.

Will we be entitiled to better Hotel AND Airfaire rates booking through you guys versus doing our own booking?

Jedi Master Mina said...

fast passes for the official store (I read we will be able to pre-order some items... sounds great),

Forgot about those...fast passes would be good, ordering our exclusives and CV stuff online before arriving to the Con, EVEN BETTER. Brilliant idea. ;)

Thursday at CIV was considered "Hyperspace Fan-Day" ONLY and it was AWESOME. We could roam the event with ease and little crowds, take care of autographs and socialize with all VIPs and scope out the place for the remainder of the event. Sure would like that again.

I believe a Fan Club Breakfast will be organized by Official Pix once again...,

Official Pix does a great job on the Fan Club Breakfast.

About the VIP passes...Official Pix has a program like this for SW Fan Days in Texas every year. It's a killer deal. Their VIP pass includes; Fan Breakfast, early entry into the Con (wait in either the hallway to the main floor or the main theater watching fan movies, refreshments, etc. until the Con opened), Speed pass entry into VIP section for autographs, and at least one Con exclusive toy/art in a grab bag (included with breakfast). For the price, it was a good deal.

Official Pix also offered discount packages on bundled autograph tickets. For instance, we had the option to purchase 7 Clone Wars voice actor tickets in a bundled price at a discount rate. Individual autograph tickets were still available for purchase, but the bundled package was a great deal. Sure would like to see that again. Plus some of the other actors offered that as well.

What I didn't like was that individual autograph ticket purchasers had to wait until after 2:00 PM to get their autographs. Bundled packages had priority to get their autographs over individual autograph purchasers. Very bad considering most of us will be on a time schedule to see and do other things at the Con. It should be first come, first serve as it concerns standing in line and getting autographs. I missed out on getting some autographs because of this. And now I'm faced with playing catch up at C5 to obtain the autographs I couldn't get at SW Fan Days, because I was prevented from standing in line. I hope I won't be prevented at C5 from standing in line at any time to get my autographs, regardless of the package I pay for.

Lastly (I promise...LOL), the Official CIV Fan hotel was located about 1 1/2 miles from the Staples Center in L.A. Please pick or try to work with a hotel that is closer to this convention center. Walking 1 1/2 miles in humidity would be brutal for all. A hotel that is adjacent to the Con would be ideal.

Thanks for listening, nice to know you guys are too. :)

Hello everyone i am so excited to hear about celebration in florida i am coming from wisconsin and definetely going to be there all four days been working on a new costume just for the celebration

Congratulations!! This is GREAT news, no matter what anyone says. Alot of folks and families who have absolutely no interest in Comic-Con or Dragon*Con, (but love Star Wars) are already excited and planning vacations around this event. Myself included. After attending the previous Celebrations, there's usually at least one special ticketed nighttime event, like C2's Star Wars 25th Anniversary Concert, C3's The Celebration at Celebration, and C4's A Conversation with Carrie Fisher. The first thing that comes to mind for me is that I'm sure that Disney World would like to participate at this convention in some capacity. What better way to celebrate than to have a ticketed Star Wars night (similar to their Grad nights or Halloween nights) at Disney's Hollywood Studios (formerly Disney-MGM Studios) open to Star Wars Celebration attendees only. Who wouldn't want to ride on Star Tours one last time (or for some folks their first and only time) before they close it down for the changeover to Star Tours II. No matter what happens, I'm sure everyone will have a GREAT time at this convention.

Does anybody know which building this will be at, the West- or the North-building?

Anonymous said...

Congrats Lance & co.! As some have already pointed out, please make sure to seriously address the issue of minimizing lines & outdoor exposure. I am quite familiar w/August in Orlando & it is brutal. It will not only be the costumed folks that will be passing out & suffering from dehydration...This is especially crucial to the elderly, children & those of us w/serious health conditions. We simply, literally, cannot be subjected to standing in lines in the sun/heat for hours. If possible try to work w/the con' center to allow access into the foyer or exhibit space, early to prevent mobs of people from being sent off to the hospital (that doesn't make for happy con' goers that spend $$ on an event & then can't attend).

Please please, seriously consider a fix for this. It would be quite unfortunate to be excluded from seeing guests/autograph opportunities, events, etc due to having medical issues & there being no measures set against weather exposure.

Thank you so much & good luck!

Lance Fensterman said...

Lots of comments and questions about the Orlando heat, don't worry, we have the ENTIRE West Building at the convention Center. We will have tons of air conditioned space for people to line up inside. We won;t leave you outside to melt, promise!
