Happy Birthday, Michelle!

Won't you join me (and the Daleks above) in wishing Ms. Michelle Manning a happy birthday? Michelle's NYCC, NYAF, and C2E2's Volunteer Coordinator, and she's turning one year older today. I remember back to NYCC '07 when Michelle was just starting as a volunteer. Who's have thought she'd have come so far when any sane person would have turned left at the first sight of 500 volunteers all awaiting their command. Actually, that's not so true, only 50 or so volunteers actually take commands, the rest just plot and scheme ever more elaborate ways to undermine Michelle. And I -- just sometimes -- help with these schemes.

Congrats, Michelle, for making it this long, and I can't wait for the volunteer roadtrip to Chicago. I call the window seat.

ChiTown Spidey Meets the C2E2 Team!

Brian & Kim from the C2E2 team got a special surprise interview for the web slinger himself, the ChiTown Spidey, while we were at Graham Crackers Comics in Chicago 2 weeks ago. Check it out. Brian looks a little scared, like when a kid meets Santa for the first time!

Alan Alda, A Monkey, And A Kid

Continuing the slow news week that is the final week of 2009, here's a picture of Alan Alda, a monkey, and a kid from PBS's upcoming The Human Spark by way of io9.com. Alda's long been a personal hero of mine, and I met him once a year back. I swooned.

You can swoon, too, when The Human Spark starts on January 6.

The Last Week of The Year: Part 1

So, it's the last week of 2009. A pretty slow news week, but I'm still in the office. Just had a nifty call about NYCC I can't talk about in any detail, but it got my geek sense tingling. Anything else getting my geek sense tingling? Only the final David Tennant Doctor Who two-parter going on at BBC America. Did ya see part one last week? Fans have been pretty vocally divided on the episode, some loving it absolutely and some hating it just as fervently.

While I would have liked to see a somber, introspective episode about The Doctor's past, his transgressions, and how it's all catching up to him, that would have probably been a wee bit to talky for Tennant's exit. Instead, The End of Time: Part 1 was a balls out, crazy as they come, over the top adventure. Striking, silly, swashbuckling, and staggering, it was insane in all the good ways, and it looks like The End of Time: Part 2 will only jump off the deep end more...

Brilliant!

Black Books Now On Hulu

Dear Lance (along with anyone who just so happens to read Medium At Large) I just noticed that Black Books is now on Hulu. You familiar with the series at all? It used to air in the post midnight hours of Comedy Central some time back, and if you've never caught it before, you may want to take a look.

It's a British black comedy about the lives and times of the Black Books independent bookstore in London, centering most-often on the -- as Wikipedia puts it -- "sour, eccentric, misanthropic, alcoholic" owner. Wikipedia also says it's very popular in Scandinavian countries where it's dubbed "The Crazy Shop".

Take a look now at www.hulu.com/black-books.

2009 was a big year for all of us in Reed Expo's Pop Culture family, and while 2010 isn't even properly here, we're already in the thick of planning the promotions, guests, and booths for next year's shows. But, it's the holidays, and we wanted to take a few moments to reach out to the friends, partners, and drinking buddies who help make all our events possible. Thank you!

And beyond the holiday photos that you should file away to use against us should any of the team ever decide to run for public office, you should also find some instant hot cocoa mix to get you through the tail end of 2009. Just add water for some instant holiday cheer. Correction, just add water for some instant hot cocoa. Just add water and rum for some instant holiday cheer.

A Little Self Indulgence On Leaving BookExpo….

We announced a couple weeks back that over the next few months I’ll be transitioning off my role as Event Director on BookExpo America and since it went public I’ve been thinking about this post and have not been entirely sure how to write it as it’s personal and it feels like a goodbye (one is true, the other is not). So here goes……

I came to Reed 3 years ago as an independent bookseller who wanted to stay in the book world, but have access to bigger opportunities than what being indy store runner could deliver. I had never heard of Reed, never knew that trade shows were an industry and certainly had no interest in working on other Reed shows (can you see me working on medical education events?) so its weird to consider that I’ll now be working on nothing but “other shows” to say the least! Side note, before they hired me, I interviewed with about 14 people, they clearly knew I was a bit of a nut job. Yet here I am leaving the show that brought to Reed for a portfolio of totally different shows.

The deal is I’m going to be overseeing all of our pop culture events (NYCC, C2E2, NYAF, PAX, PAX East, Star Wars and the UFC events) with an eye towards massive amounts of growth, particularly in the international realm. Cool gig, eh? Yeah, I’m pretty excited, but to say I’m feeling kind of bittersweet about no longer being officially involved in BookExpo is an understatement. The "Book World" is the world I’ve come of age in and a community that has been incredibly kind and embracing to me. These are traits, experiences and relationships that transcend a job, a title or a simple corporate function. They are about shared experience and life (that was deep!).

What can be easily overlooked is that the pop culture group is a direct descendant of BookExpo. New York Comic Con was originally envisioned as something to happen next to or inside BEA. This was 6 years ago when graphic lit was booming in the publishing world and a few iterations later it was launched as NYCC and from there we’ve grown to 7 shows and counting. So in one sense, I don’t feel like I’m leaving the book world at all.

I won’t separate myself from BookExpo entirely, I don’t think I can, it’s where so many of my friends reside (I wont even attempt to name them all here, but they know who they are) in particular Carl Lennertz who inadvertently got me the Reed gig, Gayle Shanks who kick started my life as a professional bookseller, Len Vlahos & Oren Teicher at the ABA and the best boss I have ever had in my life, period, Courtney Muller. The list goes on and on (see this is already beginning to sound like a goodbye, I swear it’s not!). In another sense, I’m moving into an even more entrepreneurial role that demands more and more creativity to envision new events in new spaces. It’s kind of a dream job really.

So I’m psyched and to all of my book pals, I think my bud Kuo Yu at Diamond Book said it best when he told me, I’m paraphrasing here, “What are you crying about dude? You are still in books, I left Random House to come here, and I’m still a book guy”. So I am still a book guy, still an indy focused handseller, I’m just doing it in a different space.

Here ends my self indulgent post about me, and don’t forget book pals, I’m not going anywhere, they just aren’t going to pay me to work on BEA any more!

-L

PS – The blog is going to undergo a pretty dramatic redesign in the coming months, but the philosophy won’t change. The whole point of Medium At Large is medium agnosticism and the focus on cool content in all its forms across the events and worlds our team traverses. In many ways, the blog is even more relevant in this new role. Stay tuned.

The SWCV Weapons Policy has also been updated to make it a bit more clear. Metal Monday!

And now a word from Larry Settembrini...

Welcome to the first issue of Metal Mondays. Metal Mondays will be presented by myself and Brian Stephenson on a random Monday or two each month. I’m sure your first question is why? Well, let’s start with some background. Several members of the ReedPop team (Lance, Peter, Kim and Tonya) have a strange infatuation with cats (and we’re not talking about tigers or jaguars – we are talking about overweight, lazy, house cats). Over time, this infatuation has built up to a obsession, with silly cat jokes during meetings, cat pictures in the office and our blog turning into some sort of Egyptian shrine to Bastet on Saturdays with something called Caturday. Unless we are talking about Halle Berry, there is just no excuse for it.

Not one to sit back and let cat talk take over my life, I’m building a metal militia with the help of Brian Stephenson. Brian and I decided that we need to bring an edge to the group. And why not something that really has nothing to do with anything that we do for work – Heavy Metal.

So what can you expect? Get ready to be scared, shocked, and outraged as Brian and I take you through the history of Metal. We’ll share moments in history, reviews of new music and where-are-they-now updates. You can expect everything from classics like Kiss, to 80’s pioneers like Crue, Ozzy and Slayer. If you expect coverage of Staind or Pap Roach – set your reminders to view the blog on Saturday.

So allow me to kick off the first issue ever of Metal Mondays with a classic. Something that whether you like it or not, defined metal music and influenced millions of metal heads around the globe. I present to you a pioneer of metal and a scene from one of their stage shows. You wanted the best? While you got it – the hottest band in the world.

Our friends at Kinokuniya host a number of anime-themed events, including a J-Pop Holiday Party coming up on December 19th. Now at Forbidden Planet!

Meet Me In Chicago For a Slice and Some Beers? Monday 12/14, Be There!

The C2E2 team will be hitting Chi Town hard during our Operation: Winter Storm trip beginning on the 14th (read all about it right here) and I promised a meet up at some point during that week. So here it is gang, come out, have some beers, eat a few slices, hang out with the C2E2 team and tell us what you want out of the show and we promise to give you a few off the record updates on what we’ve haven’t announced yet (one hint, it’s not brining Steve Ditko to the show, sorry).

Kinokuniya To Send A Fan To Japan!

Kinokuniya Bookstore (1073 Ave of the Americas) has got one heck of a holiday gift for you. A free trip to Japan. From now until December 19th, Kinokuniya Bookstore in NYC and American Airlines are raffling off one trip from anywhere in the continental USA to Tokyo. How do you enter? Just visit Kinokuniya Bookstore in Bryant Park to sign up.

The winner will be revealed at 5 PM on the 19th as part of the Kinokuniya and Samurai Beat Radio “J-Pop Christmas”. Beginning at 1 PM on the 19th, Samurai Beat Radio will be playing a selection of the top-rated J-Pop songs as picked by Tokyo FM. Fans will be able to vote for their favorites, with their picks broadcast on samuraibeatradio.com. And, as I just said, the J-Pop Christmas will come to a close with the drawing of the free trip to Tokyo… as well as a number of other prizes.

Any small print? The top prize is a single round trip coach class airfare to Japan, valid until August 31st, 2010. You don’t need to be present on the 19th to win, so enter any time you’re at Kinokuniya from now until then.

Also, when you hit up Kinokuniya, be sure to check out their Domo Christmas Tree. Oh yes, I said Domo Christmas Tree. Curious? Well, now you gotta go to Kinokuniya to get a glimpse for yourself!

Diamond Brings the Biz of the Biz to C2E2

Over the last two months we’ve heard a lot of talk about competing cons and head to head match ups, and through it all I’ve said repeatedly that we focus on our events, our customers and delivering value. We see it as our job to deliver something back to the industries we serve, not simply take something out of it and the Diamond Retailer Summit (DS2, as they are calling it) is a prime example of that philosophy in action. Since the beginning of NYCC we’ve had a professional component to our shows that we hope facilitates the business of the business (licensing, rights, education, retailer growth, librarian education on collection development, educator curriculum development, etc) in addition to a massive gathering of fans.

I think the DS2 announcement that came out on Friday got a little lost in the buzz over our Star Wars Celebration announcement, but DS2 is mission critical to what we believe it is our job to do with these events. Our goal is to create environments where the right players are in the room to enrich their businesses, grow our industry and leave C2E2 or NYCC or any event we stage feeling like their business was better for being there.

We’ve been talking with our friends at Diamond for 4 years about doing a summit at NYCC and the timing and logistics just never quite worked, so it’s awesome that we’ll have a huge collection of retailers in Chicago for C2E2, it will make the event better for them and for all of the other publishers and exhibitors participating in the show, and that’s what are in the business of doing.

It’s worth noting that we’ve been talking with ComicsPRO for months and while DS2 is not ideally positioned on the calendar in relation to ComicsPRO we are working on some ideas of what we might be able to do with them and what they might be able to do at C2E2 as well.

Details are still be hashed out, but here are a few points from the press release that went out last week about plans for DS2 at C2E2:

Diamond Summit2: Focus On Retailing will kick off with an Opening Night Reception on Wednesday, April 14, with a full day of Better Retailing Workshops and Presentations planned for Thursday, April 15. Marking a different direction for the 2010 Retailer Summit, retailers can expect targeted, supplier focus groups throughout the day and keynote speeches from industry leaders at each meal time event.

Retailers will also enjoy complimentary admission to the Professional Only Preview of the C2E2 Show on Friday, April 16 from 10am to 1pm and will receive a valuable “coupon book” good for limited edition items, raffles, and sales—all redeemable by visiting select suppliers on the show floor.

This is where being the largest trade show organizer in the world comes in handy. As a company, traditionally speaking, the strength of Reed is to bring business people together to do business. It’s cool that we in the pop culture group have been able to turn that model on its head, but continue to add value to our customers at our pop culture shows by delivering the business of the business to them.

Not So Fast - A Quick Word on Star Wars Celebration V Hotels

I know everyone is excited over CV’s announcement this week and I’ve gotten a lot of emails and questions on hotels. I also heard from our friends in Orlando that the hotel community is getting a ton of calls already from fans eager to book a room and get a great deal. I want to remind everyone that we are currently contracting huge room blocks for the show and that when we work in volume like that, we usually get pretty good deals. Within 2 weeks we’ll have a ton of hotel deals for you to pick from (some will come online even sooner) so please check our travel page (here’s a handy link for you) over the next couple of weeks to make sure you get the best deal.

My advice:

Wait 2 weeks to book through us so you know you are getting the best deal at an “official hotel”. If you really, really feel like you have to book a room now make sure you can cancel without a penalty. I’d hate for anyone to book a room and then find we have negotiated a better rate at a better hotel and you can’t cancel yours.

We actually have rates committed from 2 dozen hotel properties near the convention center and now that we’ve finalized the details of CV we are drafting and signing contracts. That takes a little bit of time, but not too long.

Hang tight, we are working hard to get the very best hotel rates for you at the very best hotels.

Peter saw this on Twitter today and we want to make sure you don’t pay any more than you need to, that’s why we are here!

galacticbinder: Several hotels in Orlando have already jacked up their prices for #SWCV. Red Roof from $50 to $95 - Rosen Centre from $124 to $170 #starwars

Here’s that handy link to the official CV Travel Page one more time.

Seriously, David Tennant, you have the best job in the world. Why do you have to break my heart and leave?

Orlando Mayor Welcomes CV!

Nice message from the Mayor of Orange Country here welcoming Celebration V to Orlando. Pretty cool, for a politician. We got to meet Mayor Crotty when we were down in Orlando a few weeks ago and he's a pretty cool dude, I must say. Sure he's a politician, but a pretty laid back guy and obviously he's not above having some fun welcoming all of us to Orlando. Now, if he can get us all a police escort from the airport.....

And at the top of my Christmas list...

Volunteer Coordinator Michelle just sent the following. DC Unlimited's coming out with a line of True Blood busts -- Sookie Stackhouse, Bill Compton and Eric Northman. Swoon. So, Vampire Bill is now fighting it out with The Doctor's Future Sonic Screwdriver for the top of my Christmas list.

C2E2 & NYCC Holiday Tour – We Are Coming To Your Town (Well, if you live in Chicago or NYC that is)

Ever wonder what I am really like?

Yeah, probably not.

Do you like free stuff?

Yeah, now that’s better!

For the holiday season I and the Merry Band of Nerds here from the office will be hitting the streets and comic shops of Chicago and NYC for something we like to call Operation Winter Storm. The purpose? To hang out with you guys, give away some free swag and generally thank you for supporting NYCC and C2E2.

In both cities we'll be giving out gifts from our friends at Magnolia Pictures, Magnet Releasing, Diamond Select, and Mezco. Also, in NYC, we've got gift certificates for $5 off NYCC tickets, candy canes, and various other stocking stuffers. As for Chicago...

For Chicago, we’ll be delivering tickets to all of the area retailers so you can now buy C2E2 tickets from you local Chicago comic shop! We are also working on a meet up where we can hang out and grab beers together. Stay tuned, but we’ll likely do something on the 15th or 16th somewhere in Chi Town. Want more? We'll be giving out candy canes and stocking stuffers, and since we are in the holiday spirit we will also be raffling off a C2E2 VIP package while we are in Chicago. As if all of that wasn’t enough we will also be doing a little twitter scavenger hunt throughout downtown Chicago. Who knows what special little presents you might be able to find if you start following us on Twitter @c2e2!

Here the details for Operation Winter Storm and please come meet the C2E2 & NYCC teams at a comic shop near you!

Star Wars!!!!!!

Months and months in the making, I’m psyched beyond words to finally tell you that we will be the exclusive producer of the Star Wars Celebration events going forward. Cool for us, sure, but what does this mean for you?
With our pals over at Lucasfilm we’ll be creating Star Wars Celebration V next August 12-15 in Orlando Florida.

This is honestly one of the most exciting projects I’ve worked on and we are all thrilled beyond words to be working with Lucasfilm and on the Star Wars events. In Peter’s words as he was writing some copy for the web site, “I would be the 10-year-old Peter’s hero”. Oh yeah, the web site, it’s live now, but will be filled in substantially as we craft the event, you can find it at
www.starwarscelebration.com.

Tickets will go on sale in the next week and hotel and travel info will be up in the next couple of weeks. I’ll make sure to give regular updates here on the blog, but the best way to know just what’s what around the Celebration is to sign up for the email newsletter and you can do that on the web site.

We’ve been working on this partnership for months and it’s been killing me not to say a word about it, but working with Lucasfilm and Star Wars specifically is a dream come true, and it’s an indication of where things are going for us. We started 5 years ago with an untested idea in New York Comic Con and for 2010 we’ll be set to run at least 6 events in the pop culture space and we’ll be working with some of the best brands in the world like Lucasfilm, UFC and Penny Arcade. It’s a cool time to be a part of the quirky little team of people here at Reed who are working on all of these projects.

OK, now it’s going to be a ton of work for the next 8 months to build an amazing Celebration V, but we are amped and ready to go! Drop me an email, leave me a comment and tell me what you want out of the show this summer because, as always, we are but the humble servants of the fans!

Lastly, I really wanted to make an announcement without using the words “con-wars” but I think I have to set the record straight … of course, it’s not lost on me what else is happening in the world of pop culture events on our Celebration dates, but my advice on that is please stop looking for black helicopters! We had about a zillion factors guiding our date selection decision and we took into account the most pertinent concerns for our fans and exhibitors. We looked carefully at other shows happening in and around Florida in the month of August, we did our best to avoid conflict, but ultimately had to choose the dates that were available to us and that would work the best for our fans. Nothing more than that folks. Sorry to even bring this up, but someone certainly will, so I’d just as soon head off the conspiracy theories before they germinate too much.

Wow. Star Wars. This is totally sick!

Japanese Hot Pots Warm Your Soul!

Hot pots are the quintessential Japanese comfort food: simple, fast, and easy to prepare. Many Americans, though, have almost no point of reference for Japanese food beyond the local sushi bar, so cooking this cuisine can sometimes seem exotic and intimidating. Enter Japan Society along with chef Tadashi Ono of Matsuri restaurant and food journalist Harris Salat, the authors of Japanese Hot Pots: Comforting One-Pot Meals.

Ono-san and Salat are coming to Japan Society on December 8 to introduce and demystify the Japanese communal eating tradition for American home cooks with belly-warming dishes from all corners of Japan – with a presentation that includes both a book signing and food tasting. Want to learn more? Visit http://www.japansociety.org/event_detail?eid=64f6f3be

The event kicks off Tuesday, December 8 at 6:30 PM. Tickets are $18 for the general public and $15 for Japan Society members, seniors, and students. Japan Society is located at 333 East 47th Street, New York, NY.

Thanks to Shoshana for the tip!
