The ICv2 Digital Comics Conference at NYCC

Ladies and gents, the ICv2 Conference has become a tradition at New York Comic Con, and this year we're proud to play host to the latest ICv2 discussion, about a light little subject, "The Future of The Medium".

This year's ICv2 event looks at the process of selling comics and graphic novels and how they’re created are being fundamentally transformed. To navigate this transformation, ICv2 is bringing together the best minds in the industry to discuss the lessons learned so far, where the business is going, and how to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities presented by digital distribution.

The ICv2 Comics & Digital Conference will take place at the Javits Center on the eve of New York Comic Con, from 1 to 5 PM on Thursday afternoon, October 7th. Following the afternoon sessions, at 5 PM, Conference Sponsor Transcontinental Printing will host a cocktail party for attendees.

NYCC Lord of The Rings Art Contest

The Lord of The Rings exists beyond the pages of the trilogy and apart from the celluloid of Peter Jackson's films. It is a saga that lives in the heart and minds of fans around the world, and while the language of the story may change throughout the globe, the iconography is universal. To celebrate this, and in anticipation of the Radio City Music Hall presentation of The Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers (the same nights at New York Comic Con), New York Comic Con and CAMI Music are asking fans of Lord of The Rings to put their affection down on paper in a Fan Art contest. With pen and paper, water color, oils, chalk, inks, or Photoshop, create a piece of art hearkening back to you favorite characters, locations, scenes, elements, or themes of the Lord of The Rings trilogy. Up for grabs? Tickets to the opening night of The Lord of The Rings at Radio City!

Masterpiece and the BBC present the US Premiere of Sherlock at New York Comic Con

Sherlock Holmes. You know the name. You know the story. But you've never seen it like this. NYCC is proud to host the newest take on this immortal British hero -- from the writers of Doctor Who, a Sherlock for the 21st century!

Sherlock Holmes stalks again in this new, modern version of the Arthur Conan Doyle classic, starring Benedict Cumberbatch (Atonement, The Last Enemy) as the go-to consulting detective in 21st century London, with Martin Freeman (The Office UK, Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy) as his loyal friend, Dr. John Watson, and Rupert Graves as the long-suffering Inspector Lestrade. Fast-paced, funny, and surreally true to the hero’s fantastic gifts for deduction, the series -- co-created by Doctor Who’s Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss -- was a massive hit when it aired this summer in the UK. Sherlock premieres on American TV on Masterpiece Mystery! on PBS with A Study in Pink on October 24, followed by The Blind Banker on October 31, and The Great Game on November 7. But you can be the first in the US to see Moffat and Gatiss's Sherlock on Friday, October 8 at New York Comic Con!

The new Sherlock mixes beloved elements of Conan Doyle’s original stories with the even more dangerous possibilities for criminal mischief in the modern world, especially by the likes of Holmes’s arch enemy, the evil Moriarty. Following the PBS airing, the BBC will release Sherlock: Season One, featuring exclusive bonus content, on DVD and Blu-ray on November 9. Again, though, no need to wait, as you'll be able to take in the very first episode of Sherlock on the big screen at NYCC!

Sherlock! 8 PM! Friday, October 8! Room 1A06! Thank you, London!

Somewhere on the 7 Train

One final Stan Hunt surprise, going round and round the city, probably until someone looks up and spies it in 2018.

Saturday, August 28, 2010

I've got no words for this.

Snurkling.

In a few of our Stan Hunt posts, we used the work "snurkling". Actually, we were supposed to use the word "snurkling" but I posted "snorkling" as I didn't think "snurkling" was a word, but team member Kate Olson (of cupkate fame) tapped me on the shoulder, letting me know it should be "snurkling". The posts have since been changed. (And, yes, eagle-eyed reader, "snorkling" isn't even the proper spelling of "snorkeling" -- or "snorkelling" if you're in the UK.)

But what is "snurkling"? It's a reference from Kate's favorite kid’s book. An excerpt from "I Like You" by Sandol Stoddard Warburg...

We snurkle under fences.
We spy secret places.
If I am a goofus on the roofus hollering my head off,
You are one too.
If I pretend I am drowning,
you pretend you are saving me.
If I am getting ready to pop a paper bag,
then you are getting ready to jump.
HOORAY!

Snurkling. It's a word. Deal with it.

House on The Hill Returns!

My college career was largely spent playing a board game called House on the Hill. My copy of the game is, I believe, in Florida right now with a friend, and while I've been pestering him get it back, I'll need to no more. From ICv2...

Avalon Hill has announced the updated and revamped Betrayal at House on the Hill will be released in October of this year. This upgraded version of the game includes eight new haunts and a new “hidden traitor” mechanic.

The original version of the game was released in 2004, and was awarded the Gamers Choice Award for “Best Board Game” of that year. The first edition has been out of print for some time. The new edition has been updated and expanded with new haunts, new game mechanics, and new item cards. The components have been upgraded with new artwork and tokens that are easier to use. The designers also revisited some of the original game scenarios and rebalanced them to improve gameplay.

Betrayal at House on the Hill is a cooperative boardgame for three to six players. The setting is a classic haunted house, complete with mysterious goings-on. The game board is composed of tiles representing rooms and hallways of the house, so the layout can be different in every game. The players explore the house, seeking clues as to the nature of the “haunt” that inhabits it, and how to defeat it. Events within the game can cause one of the players to turn against the others, hence the “betrayal” in the game’s title.

Swoon.

Stephanie Sheh Comes to NYAF!

NYAF and our friends at Bandai Entertainment are proud to reveal Stephanie Sheh will be coming to the 2010 New York Anime Festival! Sheh is the voice of Hinata in Naruto, Orihime in Bleach, Eureka in Eureka 7, Mamimi in FLCL, Mikuru in Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Akira in Lucky Star, Kinon in Gurren Lagan, Guu in Hare+Guu, and more recently Slyphiel in the new Slayers, and Excel in Kurokami. Stephanie has been cast as Yui in Bandai Entertainment's musically driven show K-ON! Stephanie is also currently voicing Audrey/Mineva and Haro in Sunrise's billingual blu-ray and DVD release of their Gundam UC. She also just recently recorded the second season of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. If you're more of a gamer, Stephanie was in Bioshock 2, Littlest Petshop 3, Aion, Nier, Final Fantasy XIII, as well as Tales of the Abyss, Devil May Cry 4, Radiata Stories, Valkyrie Profile 2, to name a few. She also just did some voice work on Secret World. She co-voice directed Resident Evil 5 and is the current voice of Rebecca Chambers for the franchise. Perhaps most exciting though, is that Stephanie is starting to do voiceover for original animation. She had the honor of recording an episode of Scooby Doo this year and did some kid voices for Glenn Martin, DDS. She also voiced the lead, Sue Yee, in Nicktoon's Three Delivery. You might recognize Stephanie as mini Olivia Munn from G4's Attack of the Show.

Darwyn Cooke at NYCC

NYCC is thrilled to announce Darwyn Cooke will be coming to New York Comic Con 2010!

Cooke left a successful career in animation 10 years ago to concentrate his creative energies on his first love -- the sequential storytelling of comic books. Cooke was soon taking the industry by storm with his work on Selina’s Big Score, DC: The New Frontier, and The Spirit. Hard-boiled crime novels, particularly Richard Stark’s Parker, then became a source of great creative inspiration for Cooke. Cooke has received Eisner awards, the industry’s highest honor, twice for Best Single Issue of the year and once for Best Limited Series of the year. In 2008, his best-selling opus, DC: The New Frontier was released as a DVD, for which Cooke shared an Emmy Award-nomination.

He’ll be speaking at the con and signing at the IDW Booth. Specifically, Cooke will be discussing The Outfit, the second of Richard Stark’s Parker novels that Cooke is adapting. It will be available nationwide in October. Cooke’s initial Parker release, The Hunter, has been a critical and popular success, appearing on over 50 “best of the year” lists as well as the New York Times best-seller list, and recently won a prestigious Eisner Award at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con for “Best Adaptation From Another Work.” The Outfit finds Parker riding high after evening the score with those who betrayed him in The Hunter. Disguised with a brand new face, life is good until a squealer turns Parker in to the Outfit for the price they put on his head… and suddenly this coast-to-coast crime syndicate discovers that all their bravado doesn’t measure up against one hard man.

(Richard Stark’s a pseudonym used by the revered and multi-award-winning author, Donald Westlake.)

From New York Magazine by way of Michelle...

The momentum of the feline species in fashion has been steadily rising over the past couple of seasons. While they are so often the accessories — jumping over a model's head, hanging off a celebrity arm, cuddling up to total strangers and pretending to love it against their wills just for the sake of a beautiful picture — last night at the Algonquin Hotel, their moment finally came. The cats starred in a runway show that was part of the birthday party of the hotel's resident cat, Matilda. The result was fierce, ferosh, and perhaps a little frightening — but such is the very nature of boundary breaking. Enjoy highlights in the slideshow.

A Conversation with Gary Panter and Peter Saul at MoCCA - Tonight

In celebration of the last weeks of the exhibition NeoIntegrity: Comics Edition, curator Keith Mayerson speaks with featured artists Gary Panter and Peter Saul about their relationship with both comics and fine art history. What have been some of their major influences, and why were they important to their work? What is their relationship to the marketplace, and to their public? Also, what are some of the ways that comics have been informed by fine art, and how have comics influenced fine art? How are these worlds part of one another, and how are they separate? How is the language of comics used in fine art to gain some of its content and power, and how have comics been influenced by art history to become even more dynamic as an art form? Admission is $5 for general attendees -- and free for MoCCA members. It begins at 7 PM.

Also tonight? Free screenings of The Muppets Take Manhattan and The Blues Brothers. Get details about these events and more at nerdyorkcity.com.

Quesada, Loeb, Fraction, Larroca, and Bendis!

The galaxy far, far away took over ReedPOP last week. Star Wars Celebration was an event. It was a lot of fun, a lot of work, and a lot of sore feet. Now, though, as we're getting back to Norwalk and NYC, we've got some big bits of news to break. First up...

Some Cool CV Stuff From IGN

Today was the big day at Celebration V - kicking off with George Lucas and Jon Stewart live on stage - and it's wrapping up this evening with two big events...

Spike Star Wars Screenings - Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi
The Spike Star Wars screenings conclude with giant, theatrical screenings of Episodes V and VI. They run from 7 to midnight in the Digital Stage as SWCV. I'd promote the cool posters Spike's giving away to the first 100 fans in line, but we've already got well over 100 fans here. I will, however, promote the popcorn out front of the Digital Stage. Yummy.

The Last Tour To Endor - Disney's powering down Star Tours, the classic ride going away before returning with an update. You can say goodbye tonight in style by riding Star Tours and experiencing all of Disney's Hollywood Studios mixed with a galaxy far, far away - from Star Wars fireworks to an Indy Star Wars Stage Show! Star Wars Speed Dating Friday Session Added

Due to the tremendous response to our Thursday Speed Dating session, we're opening a new session on Friday! Starting at 3 PM, sign ups will be first come, first served beginning at 2:30 outside the Speed Dating Room.

Blast Off! Astronaut Walter Cunningham Comes to Celebration!

Star Wars Celebration celebrates the broad, vast, and wide universe of the Star War Saga. And beyond the actors, actresses, and behind-the-scenes geniuses who’ve breathed life into the heroes, villains, droids, and aliens of the galaxy far, far away, Celebration is very proud to have two men who’ve actually been into space join us. We’ve previously announced astronaut Jon McBride will be at the convention – speaking at 12:30 PM today (Thursday) on the Digital Stage. Today, we’re excited to announce astronaut Walter Cunningham will be at the show on Saturday.

Walter Cunningham, a member of the third group of astronauts selected by NASA, was the Lunar Module pilot on the first manned Apollo mission, Apollo 7, an 11-day Earth-orbit flight in October 1968. He worked as a scientist with the RAND Corporation before becoming an astronaut. He attended the Advanced Management Program, Harvard School of Business, in 1974. NASA selected him as an astronaut in October 1963, and on October 11, 1968, he, Commander Walter Schirra and Command Module pilot Donn Eisele were launched aboard Apollo 7. The 260-hour, 4 1/2-million-mile flight was a complete success and provided NASA with confidence to send the next Apollo crew, Apollo 8, into orbit around the moon. He is appearing in the Kennedy Space Center booth (341) from 1 to 3 PM on Saturday, meeting fans and speaking about space.

New Celebration V Addition: A Conversation with the Masters

Update your calendars, because we've got a late addition to the programming mix on Thursday -- the world debut screening of a newly created video that commemorates Episode V...

Thirty Years Later: A Conversation with the Masters
Thursday, August 12
11:00-12:00
Digital Stage (Valencia A)

Thirty Years Later features George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Lawrence Kasdan, and John Williams looking back on the making of The Empire Strikes Back in this new, insightful retrospective from Lucasfilm. The masters discuss and reminisce about one of the most beloved films of all time. (Note that George, Irvin, Lawrence, and John will be in the screening -- not on stage.)

This film event will be co-hosted by Liz Lee of MTV's popular show "My Life As Liz," a show about a high school senior and her friends who are outside the mainstream of daily high school life, making alternative cool all over again. Liz is a "nerd, and proud of it," who enjoys comic books, indie music, and most importantly: Star Wars.

Almost there.

Celebration V Gallery to Feature Early Ralph McQuarrie Artwork

The name Ralph McQuarrie will forever be synonymous with Star Wars. It was his keen eye, vivid imagination and artistic renderings that first brought to life the worlds and words of George Lucas' script while the young director was pitching his film idea to studios.

SWCV's pleased to reveal we'll have on display a collection of more than 100 pieces from McQuarrie's personal collection -- some of which had been forgotten for decades. Just months after publication of The Art of Ralph McQuarrie -- which was designed to be a comprehensive, career-spanning retrospective of the legendary artist's work -- McQuarrie himself discovered a large, forgotten folder of art when some cabinets needed to be moved to access the failing furnace in the Berkeley, California home he shares with his wife Joan.

McQuarrie inadvertently had stumbled upon a veritable treasure trove of designs, sketches and concepts that literally had not seen the light of day -- in any form -- since they'd been laid aside decades ago. Since a second edition of the lavish hardcover book so soon after the first impressive volume was out of the question, there was no venue to showcase this tremendous find.

Until now.

The original works on display in this exhibition include character, creature, spaceship, weapons and planet designs, as well as numerous thumbnail sketches and original pencil drawings that were used in the making of the iconic Star Wars production paintings, Christmas cards and other items. Most notable, however, is the inclusion of the very first Star Wars sketches Ralph ever created -- the day he received the original script from Lucas.

Some of the work will seem familiar, since it led to McQuarrie's iconic production paintings. While none of the original artwork from the Lucasfilm Archives is on display here, in some cases the exhibit includes reproductions of those paintings to show the evolution from initial thumbnails to finished pieces.

Though he had never worked on a film production prior to Star Wars, McQuarrie went on to work as the conceptual designer on the film's first two sequels. He continued working as a film designer with the alien ships in Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and his work on the film Cocoon earned him the Academy Award for Visual Effects.

McQuarrie's incredible, imaginative and influential Star Wars art has been seen around the world and still continues to be an inspiration to artists today.

And for those looking to take a piece of the exhibit home with them, there's a 48 page souvenir guide containing all of the art on display. And to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, 12 of McQuarrie's production paintings have been reproduced as 10- by 20-inch Metallix prints, limited to 80 of each print. Sharp-eyed McQuarrie aficionados may notice that two of the Metallix prints (albeit without the cool Metallix finish) were included in Ballantine's 1980 set of portfolio prints -- the remaining ten, however, are new to this format. Some of the prints will be available signed by McQuarrie and all of them will be numbered.

Finally, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, a set of nine trading cards showcasing photos of Ralph working behind the scenes as well as in costume as General McQuarrie will be given away (two cards per day, one day will be three cards -- 1,000 sets total). Fans who collect all nine cards will be able to assemble a puzzle of Ralph's iconic Yoda painting on the back! Get these at the exhibit or at the Dreams and Visions Press booth.

Legendary Modelmakers at Celebration V

George Lucas’ innovative and imaginative work has attracted some of the very best talents in moviemaking, ever since the director’s first teams started creating new technologies to make his vision a reality. Don’t miss the amazing stories and recollections from two movie craftsmen – Jon Berg and Lorne Peterson - who have worked throughout the three decades of Star Wars and have come to take part in Orlando.

Jon Berg
As a child, Jon Berg was captivated by the stop-motion animated classic Mighty Joe Young, which featured the talents of Willis O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen. His first job was at a California studio called Cascade Pictures, which produced television commercials. It was here that Berg first met his future Industrial Light & Magic co-workers Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett. Eventually Berg left Cascade to join ILM, where he worked as an animator, modelmaker, and visual effects artist for the three original movies. Most notably, Berg (with Tippett) animated the holographic chess sequence between R2-D2 and Chewbacca in A New Hope, and handled the modelmaking and stop-motion animation of the AT-AT walkers in The Empire Strikes Back. Berg also played a Bith band member as well as one of the two arguing Duros (Phil Tippett was the other) in the famous cantina scene. In addition to the original trilogy and the prequels, Berg has worked on a variety of films including Gremlins, Dragonslayer, The Fly, Naked Lunch, 2010, Ghostbusters, and The Nightmare before Christmas.

Lorne Peterson
Lorne Peterson is one of the original members of Industrial Light & Magic, having been hired by George Lucas to create the models for Star Wars. In 1978, Peterson was invited by Lucas to move to northern California to oversee the production of models for The Empire Strikes Back. Since that time, he has worked on most of Lucas' movies, as well as those of Steven Spielberg. Aside from the work he has done for ILM, Peterson has done industrial design modelmaking for McDonaldland, JBL Speakers, Kikkoman, Yamaha Snowmobiles and the feature film The China Syndrome. Peterson was honored with an Academy Award and a British Academy Award for the special effects work in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
